Ice Hotel!

Mar. 4th, 2009 05:55 pm
mithen: (Fortress)
I was reading a book about unusual hotels, and came to this one: Icehotel, a hotel built entirely of snow and ice in the Swedish Arctic. It's sculpted by artists every winter, and in the spring is allowed to melt away again. The insulating snow keeps the rooms at a balmy -5 degrees C. no matter how cold it gets outside (and it gets a lot colder!)

I think it's pretty obvious what the appeal of Icehotel is for me (click on pictures for the room's web page):

More below the cut... )

So whatta ya say?  Superman Fan Conference at the Icehotel in 2011?  :D

I'd been kind of avoiding this meme because...well, once I get talking meta there's really, really no stopping me. I'm an academic, it goes with the territory. But I commented on [livejournal.com profile] anthraciteowl's wonderful analysis of why she loves Tim Drake and she gave me five things and...I could no longer resist.

If anyone hasn't done this meme, or would like to do it again, let me know and I'll give you five things I associate with you! Feel free to comment without asking for five things as well, I won't slap you with it unless you specifically ask for it, and I always love to talk meta. :)

Lots of burbling below the cut!

Title: Chapter Two:  On the Road
Pairing/Characters: Kal/Bruce
Notes: "The House of the Earth" is an AU in which a few thousand Kryptonians escaped the destruction of Krypton to flee to Earth and enslave its people.
Rating: G
Word Count: 1900
Summary: "Clark" and Bruce spend a day on the road and camp in the evening.

Kal had been terrified that the first human they met would recognize him as a Kryptonian right away, but no one seemed to look twice at a man with heavy glasses and grubby overalls, even a man who could lift heavy bundles with maybe a little too much ease. )

For obvious reasons (*cough[livejournal.com profile] scans_daily cough*) I'll be flocking any scans posts from now on.  If you friend me and have commented on my LJ or have an LJ with content on it, though, I'll friend you back...

Title: Chapter One:  A Real Boy

Rating: G
Word Count: 940
Summary: Kal leaves what used to be Gotham on his trip across the country with Bruce.

Say goodbye to Gotham, Clark. )

mithen: (Bullets and Bracelets)
One of the best parts of writing "The House of the Earth" (if by "best" one means "most agonizing") has been doing research on slavery in America and in general.  I was reminded of that when I came across this news story about Jefferson Davis' slave, who was a spy for the Union, and other slave spies.  There's a whole book out called Black Dispatches on the topic that I'd love to get my hands on.  It's amazing--people didn't see slaves as anything but furniture, so they talked freely about strategic secrets right in front of them.  That seems so... karmically fair, somehow, that their own ignorance and inhumanity could be turned against them.  And I'm always awed and humbled and amazed by stories of what people under such impossible conditions will do to fight for their freedom.  No fictional story could do them justice.

Title: As Long as We Both Shall Live
Characters/Pairings: Kal/Bruce, extended family
Rating: PG-13
Summary:   Just an ordinary day in the lives of Kal-El and Bruce-El, sixteen years later.   An epilogue to the From This Day Forward series.
Word count: 770

Kal hurried to the screen as it resolved into the figure of a young man with close-cropped black hair and a face perhaps more pugnacious than strictly handsome. )

Pick 10 people and give them the "you make my day" award.

I kind of didn't want to do this because it's  TOO DAMN HARD.  But it made me happy to read what other people said about all the wonderful folks on my flist, so I decided to bite the bullet and spread the love.  This is a literally right-off-the-top-of-my-head list, so please rest assured I agonized over keeping it at 10!

[livejournal.com profile] arch_schatten , for having a Bruce!muse that's the big brother to my Bruce!muse and who taught him everything he knows about having a sense of humor and being loving and brave.

Word count: 2700
Note:  This is technically the conclusion of the series (at least for now), but there will be an epilogue later this week!

Nightwing landed lightly on the wall of the compound, his midnight-blue costume blending into the shadows. Flamebird followed, a splash of color in the dark, but as silent as his partner. )

Title: Let No Man Put Asunder

Tiny Titans is fun to post scans from because there's so little plot, it's mostly just a hysterical set of images.

Please take note: this post is probably the only place you will ever see me discussing how absolutely adorable Deathstroke and Trigon are.

But we'll start with Tiny Killer Kroc's advice on sending email, mostly because it features a majorly cute Clark and Lois.

If you can handle seeing Slade surfing and Trigon at the old villain fishing hole, click here! )

mithen: (Knight)
--[livejournal.com profile] min_taiwan has some beautiful Arthurian Trinity art up!  They all look so gorgeous (I love the way Kal's curl dips below his crown, eee!)  Check it out!

--[livejournal.com profile] arch_schatten  shared this page with me:  Crying Men.  Basically it's for a photo exhibit, they asked various actors to cry for the camera and the results are incredibly striking.  I'm especially taken with Willem Dafoe's sort of "Wait, don't take my picture now when I'm actually racked up, wait until I'm crying attractively" look, and Laurence Fishburne, OMG.  Also, I want to cuddle Jude Law and take him home and feed him cookies.  Tim Roth, Sean Penn, Robin Williams, Paul Newman, Daniel Craig (who looks like he's been crying for hours, "Take his picture already!" said [livejournal.com profile] arch_schatten )...  it's a really visually amazing thing.  We spent much of the afternoon debating who was being sincere, who was "faking it," who was proud of producing a Single Emo Tear (I'm looking at you, Kristofferson and Christiansen!), and what kind of sad each of them was aiming for.

Title: Method Acting
Characters/Pairings: Clark/Bruce, Alfred
Rating: PG-13
Summary: Clark is chagrined to discover a betting war for his "services" at an online charity auction.

Word count: 4700

Did Clark Kent have a secret admirer, a faithful (and wealthy) reader who had finally seized an opportunity? Impossible. Actually, there would have to be two of them, bidding against each other. Doubly impossible! )

Title: We Are Gathered Here Today
Characters/Pairings: Kal/Bruce, Lex Luthor, Lara, Alfred

Word count: 3700

He could feel the strange pale radiation glancing off his skin, making his nerves tingle: an unnerving but not entirely unpleasant feeling. )

Oh my Go--Oh my Gaiman.

I may be the last person to have seen these, but I really, really wanted to share.

I've been trying not to get my hopes up too much about Neil Gaiman writing Batman, but the previews were released recently and all my cynicism falls away before Gaiman's writing and Kubert's art. Oh my, but this looks good.

I'm not going to miss the end. )

Title:  Prima Facie
Fandom:  Rocket Science
Pairing: Ben/Hal
Rating: PG
Summary: Hal's still searching for words, but he seems to have found Ben in the meantime.
Word Count: 337
Notes:  Rocket Science is a little indie movie about high school debate and a boy with a stammer who tries to become a debater.  I saw it over Christmas break and just had to write a little bit for it--cute geeky debaters make me squee, apparently.  Put up here merely for archiving and completeness's sake...I found a total of one other story in this fandom on the Internet.  *grin*

Like he's tasting words, sweet and delicate. )
mithen: (Alone in a Crowd)
Title:  Kaleidoscope

Rating: R
Summary: A Halloween costume party in Gotham leads to a night of shifting identities.
Word Count: 1300
Notes:  Written quite a long time ago and put on hold, obviously, but despite its untimeliness I hope you can still enjoy it!

Clark watched him go, his master of disguises, his ninja dressed up as a billionaire. )
