For obvious reasons (*coughscans_daily cough*) I'll be flocking any scans posts from now on. If you friend me and have commented on my LJ or have an LJ with content on it, though, I'll friend you back...
Yeah, it's sad (and I might relent since DC doesn't seem to be the source of the problem), but boy, I'd hate to finally get settled here and lose it...
DC is usually more lenient than Marvel in general, but it's a good reminder that we're always one writer's protest away from being taken down, you know?
My second-hand impression is that Peter David, currently a Marvel writer, got angry at having his comics plots spoiled, he got in touch with Marvel, Marvel got in touch with LJ, kaput. DC is usually a lot more relaxed about downloading and scanning--I've seen statements from them along the lines of "We know few people can buy every comic in a crossover, and we expect they're being downloaded." Though of course that could always change...
Better safe than sorry, although traditionally DC has been a lot more tolerant of scans and downloading than Marvel (and this was a largely Marvel-based problem). But all it really takes is one angry writer to push the issue...
Hrm these days I just f'lock all my posts just to cover my arse (spares me the worry about having my fandom activities discovered - not that I actually write fics of draw fanart though; my fandom contribution is limited to mainly compiling rec lists of particularly enjoyable fics).
I have to admit that locking stories would be really hard for me, because I do like getting new readers, and I like knowing people can lurk and read anonymously if they want to! I might unlock scans later if it looks like the storm is over, but for now it's better safe than sorry...
Yeah I can see where you're coming from. As a reader, oftentimes it's rather frustrating to be recommended a really good fic and find that it's located in a f'locked post.
I have a question. I'm looking for a story where Batman was turned into a fluffy white cat, and Superman had to save him. I thought this was one of your stories, but I don't see it on your stories list. Do you happen to know who wrote that story?
That...actually is me, lol. Somehow it got off my links...I've added it back into the document but haven't updated the page yet...I will tomorrow, I promise! It's here: When the Bat's Away....
I feel badly about the scans! I think they inspire a lot of people to read/buy comics, and I think it's really unwise to discourage people from talking about your product... *shrugs in annoyance at the companies*
Good plan. I wonder if it might also be a good idea to f-lock any essay posts over at superhero_muses that have scans in them. I know at least 3 of mine do...
Eep! I loved scans_daily. They're the reason that I'm planning to buy the entire Marvel Adventures: Avengers series one graphic novel at a time as I have enough money to spare for the next, just as soon as I get around to ordering the first one into the local bookstore. I'd've never even *heard* of that series otherwise. Well, shoot.
I know! Scans_Daily was like free advertisement for them. Entertainment for us, yes, and a good place to find both new comics and look up background on, for example, characters we didn't know who turned up in fanfiction, but free advertising for them. People bought comics because they saw them on Scans_Daily and saw they were good. Not everyone can make it to a comics store regularly, and not every store has every comic, so this was a great resource for people who have to special order anything really good they want into a local comic shop or bookstore, or even mail-order. For crying out loud, if not for Scans_Daily, not only would I not ship Captain America and Iron Man, I wouldn't even know enough about either to have even watched the recent Iron Man movie. I am not even kidding. It was also a vibrant, enjoyable community. I really wish I knew who got it shut down, so I could just tell them that. I wouldn't even yell at them or anything unless they started it. *sigh*
Darn it! I'm amazed the companies can't see that drumming up enthusiasm for comics is a good thing for them! It looks like Peter David was specifically mad that they kept spoiling his latest storylines, and ratted on them to Marvel? Man, I get uncomfortable thinking about creators being on LJ and such...
Because of your scanning, I found a comic-book store where I could read some of the comics myself. I've even bought some. I've never bought them before.
Thank you for the Batman cat story. Also, in general, thank you for your writing. I'm sooo impressed with your stories. Your writing is vivid and your stories are a must read. Often more then a few times. So, thank you!
Any chance you can get an LJ account, just a free one that I can friend? I know that's not always an option... alas. But the fic will definitely stay unlocked assuming nothing disastrous happens there!
I'm so sad about what's happened to scans_daily. It's a little sickening how creators are jumping on the viral marketing bandwagon to blitz-sell their wares and yet a well run comm which was blatantly trying to encourage people to buy comics becomes toast due to an oversensitive comic writer! *shakes head*
I don't read all the scans you post but mind if I friend you to keep tabs?
Please do! I should have friended you ages ago, actually... *does so*
On the plus side, a few big DC guns have expressed their support for S_D, so I feel pretty good about that. DC has always been pretty laid-back about downloads and scanning, saying that they understand it's almost impossible to keep up with everything, so they expect fans to fill in the gaps by less-orthodox means...
They said scans_daily will be coming back but I think they will have to create new one. I'm one of the fan of that community as well. ;__; Their scans did inspire me a lot ( and also made me order for the real comic copies ).
My major consolation is that some pretty big names at DC are supportive of S_D--Kurt Busiek said he always likes seeing Trinity scans up there! @_@ Uh, imagining people at DC poking around on Livejournal makes me very uncomfortable, lol... but it's awesome that he and Simone and Ellis are supportive...
AAAAGH NO S_D CAN'T BE GONE NOOOOOOO! It was like, the center of fandom! So much goodness, so much hilarity, it was the best way to test if I wanted to buy something or show things to other people...oh god...what will we do now...::collapses into a sobbing heap::
I knoooowwww....*whines* It was our water cooler! On the plus side, Busiek, Simone, and Ellis have all expressed their support--Busiek has said he liked seeing Trinity scans there, which made me all @_@ (They're watching us!)
Honestly, it's really not Marvel's fault that s_d got shut down. I'm sure they knew about it and were happy to turn a blind eye, but once it was brought to their attention in an official capacity, they were obligated to take action as it would set precedent for future copyright violation cases and blah blah blah.
I know a lot of people are upset, but I have to say that I'm pretty ambivalent. I left s_d some time ago because it turned in to a never-ending bitch fest that I found depressing. Also, I'm not worried about the scans I occasionally post on my own journal because, like, three people read it. As for people leaving en masse, I'm guessing this will blow over the same way all of the other Crises on Infinite Live Journals did.
Finally, I like to imagine that Marvel's legal department consists of She-Hulk and Daredevil, the two most prominent MU lawyers.

I never had much use for s_d myself, because yeah, I would tend to get embroiled reading the comments and get rather depressed with the negativity. I trained myself to only read the scans themselves when someone linked the pages. :)
It does look like DC is a lot more willing to ignore both scans and downloads, which is a good thing. It's just always going to panic people when they see a name struck through, somehow.
She-Hulk and Daredevil working togetehr would be a pretty world-shattering combo! Have they ever interacted? They seem almost polar opposites on the spectrum...
Actually I am a lurker too, but I love posting anonymously, so I think I may have to skip the scans. :(
Still, you are doing the right thing and I am probably showing my age when I say that I never understood why so many think such things are not a constance danger. Better safe than sorry... and I am really here for the fanfics, anyway. Though I must admit that you have just introduced me to the mini-titans earlier today: so awesomely cute I may have to go and get a few issues for myself...
Also: your name change took me completely by surprise and I have missed months of your fics! *off to read*

You could make an account just for looking at scans and post anonymously to everything else... :)
Still, you are doing the right thing and I am probably showing my age when I say that I never understood why so many think such things are not a constance danger.
Yeah...I'm also old enough to have some vivid memories of writers and fandoms decimated when TPTB got wind of them. As a semi-related note, the name change is also from an excess of caution, as a friendly student found me and warned me I was way too easy to find. :) Sorry about that, but it did seem safest to sever ties pretty dramatically... (I really hated to do it!)
