Summary: Selected and edited by Mr. Frodo Baggins from a trunk full of letters and documents bequeathed to him along with Bag End. There are many more letters, particularly from the King of Erebor, Thorin Oakenshield, which are not included. The letters of Bilbo Baggins over this time, while many and varied, are preserved in the archives of Erebor and are not replicated here. The letters excerpted below cover a span of twenty-six years: from Third Age 2942, when Bilbo returned to the Shire from the Lonely Mountain for the first time, to T.A. 2968.

I must remember that is spring there now, and I have never seen your home in spring. I do not know how the spring sunlight looks as it slants across your kitchen table, or what birds sing outside your window, or how the air smells when scented with all those flowers whose names I cannot remember. )

Story Summary: In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent--from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond--with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King Thrór.
Chapter Summary: Bilbo prepares to leave Erebor and farewells are said--but farewells are not forever.

I can't leave behind the silver salt and pepper shakers Dori gave me, or the crystal buttons from Mîn. And it would be rude to not take the bronze shield from Gimli, although I can't imagine when I'd need a shield! )

There was so much work to be done, so much to be set right. So much to do and so much to learn, and for a while it seemed like they had all the time in the world. )

Chapter Summary: Thorin returns to Erebor, and Bilbo Baggins enters the Lonely Mountain for the first time.

Bilbo found himself missing Fíli and Kíli's chatter intensely. Cheering words seemed to falter in the bleak wind, and the locked and hidden door seemed somehow ominous. )

Chapter Summary: The road from Bree to the Misty Mountains is a smooth one. Only a few crises arise, such as goblin attacks and public speaking.

After hearing Fíli and Kíli praising Bilbo's cooking extravagantly, the wagonmaster decided to put him to work helping with meals. This arrangement made Bilbo feel more useful, but had the drawback of making him run afoul of the official caravan cook, a fussy and meticulous dwarf with very strong ideas of proper cooking. )
