Notes: A little bit of h/c for [profile] queen0fcups's birthday--may it be lovely and happy!

Is there a taboo against public bathing among hobbits? Have we somehow offended you? I have the impression we do that quite often, purely by accident. )

Batman/Superman #3: Written by Greg PAK; art (in these scans) by Yildiray CINAR In Batman/Superman #3, the material set in Earth-2 still features a lot of punching and exposition, with very little interaction between Batman and Superman. However, there's an interlude in which Earth-2's Superman remembers how he first met Bruce, and it is pretty much the most adorable thing ever. For starters, it's an AU of the short interlude by Jeph Loeb in Superman/Batman which showed a brief scene where Clark and Bruce almost met in our world--a newly-orphaned Bruce's car breaks down in Smallville, and Clark considers asking him to join a baseball game, but decides against it. In Earth-2, Pak posits, things went a little differently: I wasn't exactly what you'd call an extrovert, myself. Too many secrets. So I don't know why… )

So lately I've discovered the joys of 8tracks.com, which lets you put together a mix and share it with others, and it's fun!  You can see the ones I've done at my page, but I thought I'd give more detail about my latest since it's linked to Clarity of Vision, and actually fits very well the moment that series is at--and foreshadows the end quite a bit!

The cover is by the amazing Verit!

Rating: PG-13
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Summary: John comes home to find Sherlock ignoring the two clients sitting on the couch, and soon finds himself dealing with a plethora of Holmeses.

A man and woman in formal evening dress sat on the couch, their posture ramrod-straight. The woman's hands were folded tidily in her lap, while the man's long fingers were drumming slightly on the arm of the couch. )

Relationship: Thorin/Bilbo
Characters: Bilbo Baggins, Fíli, Kíli, Thorin, Dwalin, Balin, Gandalf
Fandom: Hobbit
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Rating: G
Word Count: 3100
Story Summary: In a Middle-Earth where Erebor never fell, a shadow remains in the heart of the Lonely Mountain. Bilbo Baggins finds himself drawn reluctantly into a quest that will lead him across the continent--from Bree to Lake Evendim to the icy North and beyond--with a party of five dwarves searching for an artifact that will cure the ailing King Thrór.
Chapter Summary: Discovered and pursued by goblins, the party desperately searches for an exit to the warrens beneath the Misty Mountains.

Everything seemed to be moving so slowly, yet at the same time too fast, far too fast. Thorin tore his eyes from the fight and groped for an arrow from Kíli's quiver, his hands clumsy on the unfamiliar weapon. )

Title: Six Impossible Things Before Breakfast
Pairing/Characters: John/Sherlock
Rating: NC-17
Warnings/Spoilers: Mind-control drugs and the resulting consent issues.
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Summary: A new drug that links sexual arousal to obedience? Sherlock is intrigued, but there are no handy test subjects around. Oh, wait...
Word Count: 6000

Cutting through all the technical language, it appears that a person dosed with this drug would find it nearly impossible to disobey direct commands, and would in fact find obeying such commands highly arousing. It creates a positive feedback loop: the more the subjects obey, the more pleasure they experience, the more they want to obey. )

Chapter Summary: Beneath the Misty Mountains, the fate of Middle Earth veers in a slightly different direction.

Bilbo tried to catch his breath, feeling battered and bruised. He was lying on pebbly rocks and the darkness around him was shot through with eerie rippling light and the whisper of water. )

Phantom Stranger 11: written by J.M. DEMATTEIS; art by Fernando BLANCO

So there's a big Event-thing called Trinity War going on right now in DC-land; I haven't been following it closely but I do know that one of the key plot points is that Superman seems to kill a fellow hero, Dr. Light, with his heat-vision. Much of the event revolves around Batman and Wonder Woman trying to clear Superman's name (the "Trinity" in "Trinity War" doesn't seem to refer to the three of them fighting at all, btw). In the Phantom Stranger title, for example, Bruce shows up to demand that the Phantom Stranger (who I note works for God) escort him to Heaven itself so he can talk to Dr. Light and find out what he knows about his murder.

I don't know about you, but I think insisting on going to Heaven in order to interrogate a witness is rather going above the call of duty as a detective.

But then, Batman is VERY UPSET at the idea that anyone would think Superman actually killed someone, and he doesn't believe he's responsible for a second. So the title is full of lovely moments where Batman gets really mad at everyone around him on Clark's behalf:

I ask YOU to think about a man who EMBODIES HOPE. )

Chapter Summary: The party arrives at Rivendell and is welcomed (if not warmly). Counsel is sought and received, and plans are made.

Bilbo sank down in water up to his chin and his sigh of rapture sent small, silvery bubbles floating into the air. )

Chapter Summary: The party leaves to travel south to Rivendell and somehow finds the road pleasant despite the weather.

There was a humming sound behind him, and Thorin turned to see Bilbo absent-mindedly humming under his breath, almost smiling. )

Chapter Summary: Bilbo endures a hard ride across the icy northern plains of Middle Earth, and the party meets an unexpected ally.

Bilbo shuddered as the pursuing orcs struck up some triumphant hunting song in a language that sounded soaked with blood and hate, and clung to Daffodil's back like a stubborn burr, feeling her sides heaving with exhaustion. )

Batman/Superman #2:  Written by Greg PAK;  Art by Jae LEE

When last we left out intrepid heroes, they had been punching it out when an unknown entity called the Trickster suddenly teleported them to what seems to be Earth-2, where Clark (I'll call him Clark-Nu) meets Earth-2's older Batman (Bruce-2) and proceeds to transfer the punching to him, until suddenly he realizes his parents (dead in the DCnU) are standing there.

Issue #2 is a bit frustrating, because it starts with Trickster deciding to zap Clark-2 in to replace Bruce-2, with the result being that no version of Clark or Bruce actually interact in this issue, it's all Clark-Clark and Bruce-Bruce (and I almost typed Clark/Clark and Bruce/Bruce, and now I'm thinking about selfcest and foursomes, and I AM NOT SURE I WANT TO GO THERE).

Ahem.  Clark-Nu appeals to his father, who startles him by being horrified that he was trying to beat up "the bat-thing":

My boy would never beat his best friend senseless. )

Title: The Adventure of the Delirious Detective
Fandom: BBC Sherlock
Pairing/Characters: John/Sherlock, Mrs. Hudson, Greg Lestrade
Warnings/Spoilers: None
Rating: PG-13
Word Count: 6200
Summary: Sherlock is back in 221B, but John isn't yet--until he receives a frantic phone call from Mrs. Hudson begging for his help.
Note: A BBC Sherlocked version of the ACD story "The Adventure of the Dying Detective."

The door was unlocked; it swung open to reveal the familiar chaos of papers, beakers, and random mystifying paraphernalia. There was a scattering of bones across the table, a map of Southeast Asia stuck with pins in various places on the wall. John frowned as he stepped inside for the first time in over a year, as the familiar sights and scents enveloped him.  )

Superman Unchained #2: written by Scott SNYDER; Art by Jim LEE (main feature) and Dustin NGUYEN (backup)

Superman Unchained is shaping up to be a pretty decent Superman book so far, and in the second issue we had an interesting exchange between Clark and Bruce.  Clark has come to visit (in civilian clothes, walking down from the Manor, I note), to find that Bruce is working on a problem for him:

I always know when you're approaching, Clark. )
