[personal profile] apgeeksout gave me the letter S!

Something I hate: Slugs. I was going to give some reasons, but do I really need to?

Something I love: Sami Zayn, professional wrestler and also professional human sunbeam.

Somewhere I've been: Shinjuku, the super-busy part of Tokyo.

Somewhere I'd like to go: The Seychelles, an island chain off the eastern coast of Africa. Turquoise seas and white beaches fringing tiny emerald islands... *dreamy sigh*

Someone I know: Sascha, my brother-in-law. :D

A film I like: Star Wars: A New Hope. Empire Strikes Back is way up there as well.

A book I like: The Squared Circle: Life, Death, and Professional Wrestling by David Shoemaker. Ironically, [personal profile] apgeeksout just asked if I'd read it! :D I have a Google Doc file full of quotes about wrestling, and there are many from this book. Here's one of my favorites, about the horrific murder-suicide of Chris Benoit (which I will put here because it will never be an epigraph for Heroes of the Squared Circle, because nothing like that will happen in that world): Chris Benoit was a world champion, and he murdered his wife and son and killed himself. The latter act doesn’t actually erase the former, but it suffocates it. In the arena of professional wrestling, when all the world’s a stage, when the crowd’s response determines wins, positions, and entire careers, a reprehensible act is enough to purge reality from the record. Benoit was only ever a star because the fans screamed for him to be. Now they withdraw those screams, and Benoit’s legacy is nullified. If any of this made sense, I would say it makes a certain kind of sense. That last sentence is so brutal and sad, and the whole passage sums up the strange paradoxes of wrestling.

Feel free to comment and ask for a letter of your own!

Something I hate: bigotry

Something I love: Bruuuuuuuuuce

Somewhere I've been: Berlin, lots of times.

Somewhere I'd like to go: a Buddhist temple or monastery in Japan

Someone I know: hmm that's difficult actually... I can't think of anyone with B right now

A film I like: I am tempted to write Batman Begins but I have Bruce up there already so I'll go with Billy Elliot :-) which I loved for the music and the dancing and the Northern accent!

A book I like: Brimstone - one of many installments of Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child's series around a FBI agent (the first one was made into a movie: Relic). I started reading this while still at school and it expanded my vocabulary in the field of crime, anthropology and many other fields *g* The books are well written and you always learn something (usually history, anthropology, science...) I also like the characters a lot, many are introduced in the series, some pop up now and then, some are regulars.
Now that I think of it, part of the reason I like this so much is because it's basically another Holmes-inspired crime-series. The agent is frighteningly intelligent and constructs his cases from details others miss. :-) He doesn't really have a Watson equivalent but there's a police detective he works with for a couple of novels who fits Lestrade and Watson elements.
