Day 12 Theme - Her Sanctuary

Today's theme is Her Sanctuary.

Here are some ideas to get you started: The place she calls home, where she feels safest. It can be a physical place or an emotional one. Describe it- how she found it, how she relates to it, how is it an expression of her?

Just go wherever the Muse takes you. If this prompt doesn't speak to you, feel free to share something that does. You can post in a separate entry or as a comment to this post.

Want to get a jump start on tomorrow's theme? Check out the prompt list in the pinned post at the top of the page. Please don't post until that day.

I have read the Terror and In the heart of the sea. Loved them and now I need more books about a bunch of people on a ship 😅 Any good recommendations?

Edit: I appreciate all the recs! Adding to my tbr 🥳

I obviously know I can DNF. I’m 50% through and am just curious as to if the ending is worth finishing.

For those who’ve read it, is there a decent payoff to finishing this?

Nothing happening at this point— just curious. Thx!

When the book was released I read it and it did not come across as Barker's work. It was a disappointing book for me. After I read it I looked online a fair amount. I vaguely remember finding two webpages indicating it was ghost written, but I also remember they weren't concrete and I can't find them now.

What I can find now is Mark Allen Miller's university profile page, thanks to u/muhrr, and Miller's wiki mentioning his university biography. I am unable to corroborate this elsewhere. Also the only draft I found online is at 1470 pages, but the formatting is quite different from the hard copy version. When I copy and pasted the first five pages of text into an openoffice word document it came to about 1.25 pages. The text appears to be in paperback formatting. So basically that particular version is about 300 pages, not 1470. Thus this "final draft" does not come across as long and convoluted which his original manuscript is rumored to be. The hard copy hardback and paperback versions are 360p pages long according to goodreads which ostensibly would much shorter Barker's original manuscript?

Does anyone have more information on this and/or a link to a much "longer and convoluted" version of The Scarlet Gospels?

edit: Also thanks to u/muhrr there's a lot of posts from Barker listed here. According to the posts/quotes at the link Barker had a huge manuscript which Miller fashioned into what became the published version.

I recently watched the movie together. It was quite the watch but it stuck with me and I’m enthralled by the themes explored in it. The supernatural body horror mixed with codependency and emotional rawness of relationships. A psychological and physiological inspection on our humanity… looking for anything similar!

Are there any titles that have really stuck with you? Doesn’t have to be body horror.

Hi all,

As a fan of the horror genre and a father, I'm always on the lookout for horror-themed books to read to my children. I'm familiar with (some of) the genre's big ones like, e.g., Goosebumps and Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark. But I was wondering if anyone could maybe recommend me some zombie-themed children's picture books, specifically for young children, that are worth checking out.

Thanks!

It's challenge time!

Comment with Just One Thing you've accomplished in the last 24 hours or so. It doesn't have to be a hard thing, or even a thing that you think is particularly awesome. Just a thing that you did.

Feel free to share more than one thing if you're feeling particularly accomplished! Extra credit: find someone in the comments and give them props for what they achieved!

Nothing is too big, too small, too strange or too cryptic. And in case you'd rather do this in private, anonymous comments are screened. I will only unscreen if you ask me to.

Go!

Still haven't seen Heated Rivalry but I glanced at one of the books in a bookstore last night, and realised that I had the characters backwards! Based on pictures, I'd assumed that the dark-haired one was Ilya Rozanov and the ginger one was Shane Hollander. I'd figured that Rozanov was part Kazakh (or could well have been part Korean, like Viktor Tsoi) – but the guy who actually turns out to be playing Rozanov doesn't look Slavic to me at all. I can only see him as having a severe case of American Canadian Actor Face. This has been an interesting collision of racial assumptions.

I haven't read this book but I've heard a lot about it. I've read the summary of this book and it pretty much intrigued me. The story sounds very promising and exciting.

Readers who have read this, I'd like to know more about this very book - spoiler-free.

I'm actually kinda new to horror. I DNF'd The Shining by King because I felt like it was such a slow burn rather than fast paced just how I love my books.

Could you guys recommend me some actual good horror books which are fast paced and have some REALLY good plot which intrigues readers and makes them want to find out what really is going on.

Made for [community profile] halfamoon Day 11 - The Explorer. As soon as I saw the prompt I had to do my favorite female explorers - Sydney Fox (Relic Hunter), Lara Croft (Tomb Raider), and Nell Jackson (Renegade Nell). Sydney and Lara could also represent Day 9 - The Scholar and Nell could represent Day 5 - The Outlaw.

I wrote this for [community profile] birdfeeding and decided to copy it here in case anyone wants to datahoard a bunch of birdhouse plans.

Homes for Birds Week – February 9-15, 2026

Homes for Birds Week is observed every year during the second full week in February. This year, it takes place from February 9 to 15. It is a week aimed at promoting and enhancing biodiversity by encouraging people to build and set up nest boxes for birds. Though nest boxes have existed since ancient times, the modern nest box didn’t come onto the scene until the early 19th century. It was invented by the British conservationist, Charles Waterton. Nest boxes are vital in preserving birdlife, which in turn, maintains a balanced ecosystem.

Note that birds will start migrating soon. If you want to offer shelter, you need to get it up before they arrive.
