"Rainbow Valley" by LM Montgomery
Feb. 12th, 2026 08:28 pmI liked this book more than I expected, but then my expectations were low. It's better than Anne of Ingleside in the sense that it has an overarching plot amidst the episodes. However, it's not really about Anne's kids, but the 4 Meredith children who move into the manse when their widowed father takes a job as the Presbyterian minister. Overall, there is less focus on the natural world - though the passages that do are the best, as usual - and the imagination and more on what it's like to live in a small town and have your life depend on public opinion.
The overarching theme of this book - though I'm not sure how much of this is intentional - is "what does it mean for children to be good?" with the corollary "what constitutes appropriate punishment for misdeeds?"
We learn at the beginning that the Blythe's housekeeper Susan spanks all of the Blythe children when they misbehave, except for Shirley and she's pissed when Gilbert spanks him. She's also upset when she learns that Mary Vance, an orphan adopted to be a servant by another, is repeatedly whipped by her master. From my modern perspective, hitting children for disciplinary reasons is abuse no matter what the motivations/relationship, but the fact that Susan takes Mary's side is meant to show how extreme it is. (Not sure where Montgomery herself falls, but I suspect that she aligns with Gilbert and Susan on this front.)
Meanwhile, you have the undisciplined Meredith children attempting to discipline themselves via a "Good Conduct Club" and coming up with punishments that either make the existing situation worse or cause new problems. Mr. Meredith attempts to punish one of his children for misbehavior, but can't bring himself to do it (correctly, in my opinion) and it's chalked up to his sensitive soul.
Another theme that continues from previous books is "doing the right thing, even when it's painful or inconvenient, will ultimately be rewarded"; a good chunk of the plot hinges on a string of dominoes from various incidents that lead to the happy ending. So Faith yelling at Norman Douglas leads to him going to church which leads him to reunite with Ellen which leads to Rosemary being able to marry John Meredith and become a mother figure to the Meredith children, thus resolving the discipline problem (since a huge chunk of it is due to neglect - John Meredith, despite his good points, is neither equipped to do take care of his children, nor will he allow others to do so!).
Given what I have learned of Montgomery's personal life, I suspect a lot of John Meredith's character is based on her minister husband and his own breakdown, which caused him to disassociate from the world, except here, it is... if not treatable, than at least somewhat more benign than what she herself experienced. Again, we have writing as therapy and wish fulfillment, as Montgomery simultaneously wrestles with her own issues while giving her characters what she cannot have. She's trying to recapture more innocent, upbeat vibes of the earlier books but can't quite get there after everything she's experienced.
As always, marriage is the most important decision in every adult character's life and their choice in spouse determines their happiness going forward. The good news is that second chances are possible, and as long as there's life, there's hope.
This book is a well-constructed character study of village life and childhood hijinks, but I'm not sure I would want to read it again. It feels like Montgomery is kind of coasting on the success of the earlier Anne books by having her appear briefly here and there so as to draw in readers before pivoting to a completely different story and completely different characters who just happen to share the same space. (This technique was also used in the short story collections Chronicles of Avonlea and Further Chronicles of Avonlea.) I can't really blame her for that, but there are times where it definitely feels like a bait and switch. And the obsession with war, years before the war even begins, is quite draining at times, and makes it harder to enjoy the antics when we already know bad things are coming.

Feb. 12th, 2026 06:19 pmI keep reading up on what program alumni say its major cons are. Luckily all of them so far seem to be the obvious pitfalls of getting your certification in one summer instead of over a few years of university and student teaching. I badly want to get a proper degree long-term, but, well, I can't afford to take on more student debt at present, and with my fiance's job on the rocks due to his bosses' ongoing divorce, we could really use a second, more stable salary in this household. I hope that my previous experiences will help with the lesson planning side, and the more substitute teaching I do, the more practice I'll get with classroom management. If I actually get in to the program, I'll have a mentor during my first few years. That ought to help.
In the meantime, I'm reading a lot of library books about classroom management and related disciplines. If anyone has any beloved parenting or teaching books with useful perspectives on establishing routines and setting meaningful consequences, I'd appreciate recs!

Daily Devotions from Lutheran Hour Ministries: 12 February 2026
Feb. 12th, 2026 07:08 pmMatthew 17:1-9 – And after six days Jesus took with Him Peter and James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And He was transfigured before them, and His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became white as light. And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah, talking with Him. And Peter said to Jesus, “Lord, it is good that we are here. If You wish, I will make three tents here, one for You and one for Moses and one for Elijah.” He was still speaking when, behold, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him.” When the disciples heard this, they fell on their faces and were terrified. But Jesus came and touched them, saying, “Rise, and have no fear.” And when they lifted up their eyes, they saw no one but Jesus only. And as they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Tell no one the vision, until the Son of Man is raised from the dead.”
I love this story when, for the first time, the disciples get a good long look at Jesus in glory. What a shock it must have been for them! Here was their Friend and Teacher, who had been sleeping by the side of the road with them on so many trips. He cooked for them; He taught them while they were walking down the road; no doubt they heard Him snore when He was catching catnaps in the boat on the Sea of Galilee. But now they see Him in glory—and they’re spooked.
Peter is the first to get his words back. Of course he is! And he’s super impressed by their heavenly visitors, Moses and Elijah. Of course he wants to honor them! In fact, he wants to put all three of them on the same level, with a tent for each—Moses, Elijah, and Jesus. And that’s his big mistake—because when Jesus is there, nothing and nobody else matters. Even the voice from the cloud agrees, when God says, “This is My beloved Son; listen to Him!”
And that’s the last straw for the disciples’ nerves. They hit the dust, face down, terrified—and it takes Jesus touching them before they can get over it. But Jesus does touch them—because He loves them, as He always has loved them. “Get up,” He says, “and don’t be afraid.” And when they do, they see Jesus only.
And that’s what we see, too—Jesus only. Who cares about the great men, the leaders, the teachers of this world? Give me Jesus. Give me the One who loves me so much He came down from heaven to be my Savior, to give His life for me. Give me the One who rose from the dead, and promises to raise me one day by that same power. Give me the One who cares when I’m afraid—and comes to help me, every time. Give me Jesus.
WE PRAY: Lord, You are the One I want. Let me never lose You. Amen.

Trashsplosion!
Feb. 12th, 2026 05:45 pmScene: the height of medium-city rush hour. We live at a fairly busy intersection just off the highway, so cars are whizzing by. A truck pulls up to pick up the recycling for the first time since the big ice storm at the end of January. Three or four weeks' worth of accumulated recycling.
Suddenly we hear an enormous crash, punctuated by the distinctive sound of breaking glass.
Near as I could tell from my peek out the window, something went wrong with the mechanical arm that lifts the cans up to be dumped into the truck. Our can was stuck halfway up for a bit, and the poor driver had to trigger some kind of manual release to get it out. He scooped up 75% of the fallen debris by hand, then moved on down the street, where a similar issue happened with our neighbor's can. Luckily, the driver was able to release it before more than a few pieces of cardboard spilled out. At that point, he seemed to give up on finishing out the rest of the route, and I can't blame him. Rush hour traffic was making everything about the scenario worse. The truck sped off, leaving our recycling cans and a massive heap of trash in the middle of the street.
During the ice storm, my fiance got really into collage. For the last few weeks, he's been bringing home all kinds of bits and pieces from work and generating lots and lots of teeny tiny paper scraps. Those scraps were all over the street now, mixed in with flattened soda cans and jagged bits of broken glass. We threw on pants and went out with a broom and dustpan to make the situation slightly less miserable.
The road in front of our house still looks like Oscar the Grouch threw a temper tantrum, but at least the glass, metal, and plastic is swept up. We got as much of the paper as we could, and I'm telling myself it's better than nothing. Sobbing, wailing, shrieking, etc.
At least our roommate is picking up pizza for dinner, so I don't have to think about cooking when I get out of my webinar.

The Morning After
Dinah reached across the bed to find it empty. The transfer assist was already stowed, and the bed was cold. She sighed softly to herself, knowing she could not actually complain. Just because they had chosen to go to bed together, to take another step in their partnership didn't mean the demands on Oracle were any less.
She got up, carefully stowing her costume into the duffel bag, then slipped into her gym clothes, with a shirt that said "Certified Wildcat" on it. She wondered if that particular honorary uncle would be up in New York or working on the new gym he was opening down here today.
It would be easier to spend the morning after punching things, after all. Dinah just wasn't ready to decide if this was serious, if she was strong enough to share a hero's life again.
"You really are a piece of work, Junior. Should've thought of that before you seduced her last night," she muttered to herself.
Once she had her tennis shoes tied, she grabbed the bag and headed out of the bedroom, listening to the tap of keys as she got closer to Oracle's workspace. Really, what the hell had she been thinking? Barbara was closer to Roy in age, she was always handling some fire or other, and âĻ Dinah didn't live a peaceful life.
"Give me five to get some vital connections made for Mr. Terrific, and we can grab breakfast," Barbara called over her shoulder, not really looking at the woman that had almost convinced herself this was a mistake.
Almost.
The offer of such a domestic moment after what they had shared hit Dinah in the pit of her stomach, before she grabbed her courage.
"I'll go see what's appetizing," Dinah said, putting the bag down to stay.

a series of emojis + meme
Feb. 12th, 2026 11:12 pmđī¸ Picked up some pinch hits for exchanges recently, forgot how much fun that was. I think the low effort exchanges are more likely to be pinch-hittable for me, there's one right now that I could take for a much higher minimum but man, I just can't. I'm so tired.
đĻŠī¸ This list-as-many-animals-as-you-can game was super fun: https://rose.systems/animalist. I got 135, which I think is pretty good for someone who is normally thinking about mushrooms which, and this is true, are not animals. Mostly it was snakes and birds that saved me. I need to expand my animal horizon. Out of curiosity I tried amoeba and it gave me a very snarky answer. I'm also pleased that it understood 'bin chicken'.
âī¸ Here's a meme, since my mind is too mush to do anything else. I stole it from tumblr, you can steal it from me you want.

now the touch is made
Feb. 12th, 2026 05:20 pmI've got some fun cooking plans - hopefully I get some sausage tomorrow and can make that pasta dish, but I have also been struck with the idea of making calzones, so I might do that (on Monday if not tomorrow, maybe). I took some pork ribs out of the freezer and plan to do char siu on Saturday and char siu bao on Sunday, and I might also take a crack at making some doughnuts. Depends on how much I feel like deep frying I guess. Maybe I'll make cranberry curd and fill them with that. Who can say? It might just end up being raspberry jam or pastry cream. All of it sounds good to me.

Extinction
Feb. 12th, 2026 03:21 pmBotanic gardens have amassed one of the world’s largest living reserves of plant diversity.
A new study demonstrates that fragmented data systems have kept that global collection from functioning as a single, coordinated safeguard against extinction.
At a moment when plant loss is accelerating, the information needed to act often remains locked inside incompatible databases, limiting the very safety net designed to prevent disappearance.
I have mixed feelings about this. A unified body of knowledge is certainly easier to use -- but it's also easier to damage or destroy. Right now, the government is a major threat to information that it dislikes. So having that information scattered around in places that aren't easy to reach all at once can offer a kind of protection.
