Some horror stories stick with you because they feel like they could happen or because they make you see the world differently. I’ve read a few books that left me double checking locked doors or questioning coincidences for days.

Which horror novel messed with your mind the most and why did it get under your skin so deeply?

musesfool: orange slices (orange you glad)

I am very tired. I took tomorrow off and we're closed on Monday, so I have a 4-day weekend and I am looking forward to not having to deal with several varieties of annoying co-worker (e.g., one who expects me to show up and take minutes at a meeting I was never even invited to [it's tomorrow, though, so my boss informed them I would be on vacation and someone else would have to do it]; one who insists I fill out paperwork I have already filled out and submitted - they went silent when I emailed the signed form back with the email from the day I sent it and then the invoice got paid so I guess I can't complain too much; one who feels the need to do everything by phone when email would suffice, etc.).

I've got some fun cooking plans - hopefully I get some sausage tomorrow and can make that pasta dish, but I have also been struck with the idea of making calzones, so I might do that (on Monday if not tomorrow, maybe). I took some pork ribs out of the freezer and plan to do char siu on Saturday and char siu bao on Sunday, and I might also take a crack at making some doughnuts. Depends on how much I feel like deep frying I guess. Maybe I'll make cranberry curd and fill them with that. Who can say? It might just end up being raspberry jam or pastry cream. All of it sounds good to me.

Time for a lil post before the (hopeful) trip tomorrow.

So in a recent post I mentioned I was gonna try the demo of the new Star Trek Voyager game. The demo covered the first ‘mission’ of the game. It covers the basic events of Caretaker and gameplay is split into 4 parts.

1: Flying Voyager around star systems, scan planets/asteroids/ships, travelling to them and doing little missions to get materials (so far there’s things for power, building and science)
2: Ship management, which is all about building and managing various rooms in the ship. So you’re building crew quarters, workshops stuff like that (or unlocking them)
3: Missions on planets, where you sent away teams down and use their skills in events. (Ie Tuvok security skills, Torres’ resourcefulness)
4: Combat, which only was done briefly.

So far it’s pretty good! The graphics of the ship (and Deep Space Nine at the start) look great and some koh the art looks nice. The character models aren’t the best, but I didn’t expect them to be. The demo has definitely made me consider picking it up more, cause I did like what I played. It makes me curious if it’ll be following along the series or if it’ll have its own things too. Cause obviously it had to start with Caretaker but who knows if it’ll go off in other tangents, I might have to read up some more on it. It has 10% off as a launch discount so I am tempted.

Anyway!

I also finally built the Lego set I picked up when I saw Anaconda. It was Boba Fett’s Throne Room, which is meant to be from The Book Of Boba Fett (but is more from the post credits of a Mandalorian ep). Honestly I picked it up cause it was discounted (and is now discontinued so I never expected to see it) plus it had Feenec Shand and I didn’t have a figure of her. (Plus I love the Jabba’s Palace location and haven’t had a set since the original which wasn’t great.

The set is three parts, a lil alcove with seating, an entranceway (with the doorkeeper eyestalk) and the central area with the throne. It all looks pretty nice and the figure selection is really good, since it has a selection of aliens which is nice. The features ar mostly good, though it’s baffling the tower above the entrance doesn’t have a floor (it has a hole instead) and the door doesn’t have a mechanism to hold it up. I am glad I picked it up. It’s next to the Creel house now.

I also finally finished Halloween Party yay! It’s funny to me that before the story starts there’s a foreword by someone who worked on A Haunting In Venice, mentioning that the ‘adaption’ isn’t actually one. It’s an odd thing to include but yeah. Bar character names they don’t feel the same story at all. (I still love A Haunting In Venice it’s well done and creepy but it’s very much its own thing).

Overall I thought it was pretty good. It’s not my fav of the ones I’ve read (but does look the best) and I do love that it has Ariadne Oliver, she’s always fun when she appears. I’m not sure I have much in the way of actual thoughts on it. (Though I did note the use of the word lesbian, comments on technology making mistakes and Poirot thinking on a man being beautiful.)

I had intended on switching to Hawkins Horrors, which I picked up when ordering something for mum but didn’t start at the time but….

Today mums friend came so predictably I had to go to town. I could have paid the money in tomorrow but I decided it’s best to sort it today. I’m glad I did cause I had some finds. I found a bat plush that had Dustin’s cap so I had to get it (plus it was discounted when I paid for it too!), a Lego Minecraft magazine, the Minecraft Movie (it was discounted and I rememeber it being fun and silly) and Heated Rivalry! I was so surprised to see the book in Asda and I picked it up instantly, even though it had no price. I read the prologue on the bus back and ohh boy.👀

Alas though, still no sign of Stranger things stickers (well the hell are they?) but I did get an envelope I needed to send something back (the Xbox memory card which messed up around christmas) so hopefully I can send that tomorrow.

Tomorrow should be the cinema trip (weather allowing, but it’s been ok so far). The plan is to go and see Whistle, then Send Help, then post package (and find the store that’s doing record store day). That’s the hope anyway.

Plant extinction risk rises as garden databases remain divided

Botanic gardens have amassed one of the world’s largest living reserves of plant diversity.

A new study demonstrates that fragmented data systems have kept that global collection from functioning as a single, coordinated safeguard against extinction.

At a moment when plant loss is accelerating, the information needed to act often remains locked inside incompatible databases, limiting the very safety net designed to prevent disappearance.

I have mixed feelings about this. A unified body of knowledge is certainly easier to use -- but it's also easier to damage or destroy. Right now, the government is a major threat to information that it dislikes. So having that information scattered around in places that aren't easy to reach all at once can offer a kind of protection.

I’ve always loved westerns and recently I’ve really been wanting to get into horror literature after reading The Long Walk. Naturally, when I learned about Wraiths of the Broke Land and how it

was a horror western novel I was intrigued. The plot seems engaging, but I’ve also heard how gratuitously violent it is. I can handle about a Tarantino level of gore but I’m just wondering if this turns into some torture porn book.

SPIKE: After, but I got over it—in case you're feeling all dust-happy again after your long incarceration.
FAITH: (smiles) Not if you're all repent-y. Takes the fun out of it. (the girls upstairs are making noise) No more Starbucks for the wannabes, man. They've been spazzing for, like, hours.
SPIKE: Yeah, does get a bit much up there.
FAITH: They're good girls. Just green is all.
SPIKE: So, why aren't you up there...imparting?
FAITH: That's Buffy's thing. Anyway, I just spent a good stretch of time locked away with a mess of female-types. Kinda had my fill.

Sweetie has a vet appointment tomorrow. I think she's constipated; she is peeing (including on the back room rug, which I sprayed peroxide on after mopping it up), but not passing anything. She is not eating, though I think from the pee volume she is drinking water. And she is still mainly hiding behind stuff under the ancient (possibly post-colonial era fourth-hand) desk with the enormous 92-year-old sort-of-easy-chair that is hard to move). Since she is able to get up and walk well enough, I will slide down the front of the chair under the desk tomorrow and try to move her, which will make her get up and walk out, where Steve can grab her.

My throat is okay now. Maybe something is going around? A one-day sore throat that vanishes?

Today is cloudy and chilly.  Most of the snow has melted away, leaving only a few small patches.

I fed the birds.  I've seen a few sparrows.

I put out water for the birds.

EDIT 1/12/26 -- I did a bit of work around the patio.

I refilled the hopper feeder.  I've seen a large flock of sparrows.

EDIT 1/12/26 -- I put out a fresh peanut suet cake and more birdseed.

EDIT 1/12/26 -- I did more work around the patio.

I saw a male cardinal at the fly-through feeder.

I am done for the night.

Is that Domhnall Gleeson in the newest Taylor Swift music video? Good for him! Also, I'm not into Kylux, but I hope it is inspirational to fandom. I haven't watched the whole thing, just noticed that he was in bed with a cactus, and that certainly seemed potentially relevant. Appropriate for Kylo, yes?
