Ummm, yeah, Bane arriving in Gotham + Clark thinking he's finally ready to take the plunge is the fic equivalent of someone deciding to wander off alone in a horror movie... :)
It does read a little bit like he's allowing himself to recognize that Bruce really is Bruce Wayne (the one and only), however.
That's interesting--I don't really mind if it does, to be honest! He really does have his suspicions, but he generally doesn't allow himself to admit he does...
And it does kind of kill me that the "cave" is in Metropolis and not Gotham, but he doesn't need one so much in Gotham...but I love how you describe its narrative/emotional function as a safe place for Bruce where he can be most himself... "Batman with the cowl off in the cave" is the answer I like to give for "which is the REAL person" (though it's a silly question on the whole, IMHO, they're all "true").
