I have to confess, that conversation between Theoden and Denethor was kind of the beginning of this whole thing! I've always wondered about their relationship, and imagining them meetings as younger men was...interesting. :)

I wanted some way to show that Thorin is utterly beyond the Ring now, and how better than to show all the people who are still tempted--even the smallest bit--by it? Ooooh, that Saruman is so bad...

Ha! Yes, this Thorin is quite an unusual dwarf, Saruman won't be on-balance dealing with him...
