Another solution to the mate-problem I have seen in fic is that male homosexual couples are a valid option in dwarf society.
Yes, when Thorin says he won't have a mate, he means that he won't have a female mate and no heirs. Male mates are common, I think, but aren't considered the same kind of relationship, if that makes sense. Not worse or better, just different. Thorin hasn't had any of those, either, because he's been all THE MISSION, lol.
