Yuletide!

I had a really fun Yuletide! I haven't posted a link to my own delightful gift yet, so to welcome in the new year I'm going to do that and then links to my own--they're in pretty miniscule fandoms so feel free to skip if they're not up your alley. *grin*

Happy happy new year to all of you and may your 2015 be bright and wonderful!

My gift:

Your Name (2064 words) by marmolita
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Doctrine of Labyrinths - Sarah Monette
Rating: Mature
Warnings: Rape/Non-Con, Underage
Relationships: Felix Harrowgate/Murtagh | Ferrand Carey, Felix Harrowgate/Malkar Gennadion, Felix Harrowgate/Other(s)
Characters: Felix Harrowgate, Mildmay Foxe
Additional Tags: Character Study
Summary:
A series of glimpses into Felix's life and journey toward self-acceptance.

It's a small book canon, but I got a wonderful introspective exploration of Felix's life and personae. The tags are spooky but the author was being cautious, there's nothing too terrible there!

My fics:

Everything That You Are Not (16008 words) by mithen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: NXT
Rating: General Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Sami Zayn/Tyler Breeze
Characters: Sami Zayn | El Generico, Tyler Breeze, Charlotte Flair, Bayley | Davina Rose, Enzo Amore, Colin Cassady, Hideo Itami
Additional Tags: Kayfabe Compliant, Gen or Pre-Slash, Friendship, Canon-Typical Violence, Yuletide 2014, Enemies to Friends
Summary:
When Tyler Breeze gets on the General Manager's bad side, he finds himself with six uggos sharing his Daytona Beach seasonal residence.

This Town's Filled with Rattlesnakes (1836 words) by mithen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: NXT
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Antonio Cesaro/Sami Zayn | El Generico
Characters: Antonio Cesaro, Sami Zayn | El Generico
Additional Tags: Oral Sex, Enemy Lovers, Friendship and Betrayal, Kayfabe Compliant, Yuletide 2014, Yuletide Treat
Summary:
One of his best friends was ready to attack him with the championship belt to win a match. Another of his best friends just turned on him in his moment of triumph. So Sami Zayn, new holder of the NXT championship title, is having some bitter thoughts about friendship.

Fortunately, the person waiting for him in the locker room is no friend.

NXT is maybe the most limited of fandoms available--it's a wrestling show that (in the US at least) is ONLY shown on the monthly-fee WWE network. So, you know... not a big potential audience. But I had way too much fun writing it!

Praise (1153 words) by mithen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: The Musketeers (2014)
Rating: Explicit
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Aramis/Athos/Porthos (Trois Mousquetaires)
Characters: Aramis, Athos, Porthos (Trois Mousquetaires)
Additional Tags: Bondage, Praise Kink, Drunkenness, Yuletide 2014, Yuletide Treat, Oral Sex
Summary:
Aramis and Porthos decide that the only way to get Athos to listen to their praise is basically to tie him up and gag him.

The Musketeers is a lot more approachable, especially since this is basically a PWP... *grin*

Locked Room (6581 words) by mithen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Robot Series - Isaac Asimov
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warnings: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Elijah Baley/R. Daneel Olivaw
Additional Tags: Consent Issues, Huddling For Warmth, Agoraphobia, Yuletide 2014, Yuletide Treat, Fuck or Die Scenario, Three Laws of Robotics, Trope Subversion, Fade to Black
Summary:
When Elijah Baley and Daneel Olivaw are kidnapped by a mad scientist, they find themselves in an intolerable situation that forces them both to confront certain truths about their relationship. Set immediately after "Robots of Dawn."

I LOVE THIS SERIES SO MUCH and it was a lot of fun writing this pairing! There's some annoying wank in the comments from some dude who takes umbrage at the idea that anyone would sully the pure platonic friendship of these two, since Asimov, being a dude in the 60s, OBVIOUSLY disapproved of gay people (uh yeah, NO, not true). Please don't feed the troll; I should have ignored him from the beginning...

comments

Good Happenings Meme: Day Five!

1. It was my first day of one of my more difficult classes, and the energy seemed generally positive and interested, which is good. I'm trying some new things and hoping to turn it around a bit (we have three-year-long seminars here, which is wonderful, but if the mood starts to sour it can be a panicky feeling, knowing there's still a year and a half to go!)

2. My usual haircutting place has moved to a new place next door and it's all shiny and new, which is nice!

3. Yuletide nominations are open and I'm having a lot of fun contemplating my possible nominations! So far I think my three are going to be:

--Lord of the Rings Online, because I've fallen in love with two of the characters original to that game (a Dunlending and a Rohirrim who fall in love, I'm rooting for them so much and hoping they don't get a cliched tragic ending) and would love to see fic for them.

--The Bride's Stories, which is a wonderful manga about a woman in central Asia in the late 1800s who has moved from a rural tribe to a town to marry. The marriage is basically arranged, and the groom is 12 and she's 20 (in the context of the manga, she's considered far too ancient for him). Over time as he matures, she truly falls in love with him. The supporting cast is amazing, the art is staggering, and I find the romance incredibly charming (I suppose it's a bit squicky and will probably require an "underage sex" tag, but damn it, they're so sweet together!)

Here's a page that shows how dynamic the art is:

And here are Amir and Karluk together, shortly after Karluk has saved her life and she suddenly finds herself flustered and awkward around the groom she has always seen as a boy:

--Koi to ha Yobenai, the manga I mentioned a while back, because it's sooo cute.

( I shall share Ei and Junpei's first kiss below the cut! )

comments

Yuletide Roundup and Hobbit Squee!

--Yuletide this year was a lot of fun! I wrote four stories, some in delightfully tiny fandoms, and ended up very pleased with the results. Three of my stories ended up on rec lists, so I was particularly thrilled with that!

Orual and the Queen (6588 words) by mithen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Till We Have Faces - C.S. Lewis
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Orual, Istra, Bardia, Arnom, The Fox
Summary: When Orual discovers her lost sister Psyche in slavery and brings her home, she expects a happy ending. But Psyche's story is not so easily rewritten...
This was the Yuletide prompt I was matched with--Till We Have Faces is a dark, haunting retelling of the Cupid and Psyche myth from the viewpoint of the "ugly stepsister." It also, in my humble opinion, has the only truly believable, realized female character C.S. Lewis ever wrote (the fact that his wife apparently helped with the writing might have had something to do with that). Orual is amazing--selfish, passionate, brave, a wise ruler and a humane person, although she never quite seems to realize it about herself. I love her and was happy to have a chance to try and present her as other characters in the book might have seen her (the book is in first person POV, so we never see Orual externally except through hints and implications).

Abide With Me (2901 words) by mithen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Songcatcher (2000)
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Eleanor "Elna" Penlaric/Harriet Tolliver
Characters: Eleanor "Elna" Penlaric, Harriet Tolliver
Summary: Eleanor Penlaric fell in love with Harriet Tolliver's words before she ever met her.
When I went to look at my Yuletide recipient's letter, I noticed she'd asked for fic about this movie for nearly every exchange ever. I didn't know the movie, but surely such dedication should go rewarded at some point! So I found the movie and got to write this little story about two of the characters--teachers and lovers in Appalachia at the turn of the 20th century. I wanted to write a story about how they met, which led to some wonderfully fun research about the Women's Christian Temperance Union and the early feminist movement. I had a blast with this story.

Finding the Right Words (1181 words) by mithen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Demon Knights, DCU - Comicverse
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Relationships: Exoristos/Shining Knight
Characters: Exoristos, Shining Knight
Summary: Exoristos is an Amazon. Amazons do not love men. Shining Knight is a man. One of these propositions must be wrong. Ex used to think she knew which one, but now she's not so sure.

A Seat at the Round Table (1583 words) by mithen
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Demon Knights, DCU - Comicverse
Rating: General Audiences
Warning: No Archive Warnings Apply
Characters: Shining Knight, Arthur Pendragon
Summary: In which Sir Ystin arrives in Camelot and, after long travails, proves himself to King Arthur and the court.
I'd been really looking forward to getting to read some Demon Knights fic for Yuletide, so imagine my disappointment when two different prompts showed up on the pinch hit list! Obviously the only way to ensure Demon Knights got the attention it deserved was to write it myself--so I did. :)

--In other fannish news, I went to see The Hobbit before Christmas and enjoyed it very much, but was completely blindsided by what they've done with the Thorin Oakenshield character. Still promotional photos don't do him justice--this guy is angsty smouldering sex on wheels, and I left the movie completely and totally smitten. Martin Freeman is utterly adorable as Bilbo and inhabits the character wonderfully, capturing all sorts of Hobbity mannerisms and non-verbals that make him totally memorable.

Hm, a brooding, angsty Prince who witnessed the death of his parents at an early age, then wandered the world preparing for the day when he will return to his home and reclaim it...a peaceful, apparently-simple guy from a bucolic rural town who may have more inner strength than he seems to... Uh oh.

Yeah, I'm afraid you're going to have to brace yourself for some (God, I hope) understated Thorin/Bilbo on your flist soon. It's really the first fannish thing from which I've emerged saying "I MUST WRITE SOMETHING" in...ages...so I've decided it's no use fighting it.

(Can anyone point me to some good Hobbity icons, maybe?)

comments

Merry Christmas!

To those who celebrate it, Merry Christmas! I come with gifts for you!

The first is sharing my Yuletide present, which is a LONG and FANTASTIC Vassalord fic with just the right levels of angst and cute, it made me sigh and sniffle and smile in all the perfect proportions!

Pietà (4282 words) by Anonymous
Chapters: 1/1
Fandom: Vassalord
Rating: Teen And Up Audiences
Warning: Major Character Death
Relationships: Charles J. Chrishunds/Johnny Rayflo
Characters: Johnny Rayflo, Charles J. Chrishunds
Summary:
Sometimes, he dreams of rain.

The other is a Superman/Batman holiday fic: Not a Wonderful Life by alexandraplatz. It's a story that takes seriously the conceit that Santa and Superman would be neighbors and runs with it in all sorts of absolutely fantastic ways, hilarious and bittersweet and just plain adorable, when Batman is investigating a case that requires information from Chris Kringle. I loved every word of it and I'm betting you will too. :)

I am full of fantastic pot roast, stuffing, homemade bread and Christmas cookies...time to put on "It's a Wonderful Life" in the background and start chewing my way through the Yuletide archives. I shall be back in a few days with recommendations there, as well as another Clark/Bruce story before the year ends!

comments
