I am amenable to this argument, especially when some of the original vast canon appears to have been lost to time (ironically) forever. I wonder if DC/Marvel have completely lost any of their canon? And Who also has something that came up over on the LJ side--that is, Who lacks a clear narrative throughline. The Doctor has a (rather flexible) origin story, but once he actually shows up in the text he can go hang out in medieval France or fight Nazis or investigate murders in other galaxies, whatever the author needs of him (actually, I don't know if this is still true for New Who! It was very true for 4, when I was a fan, but I don't know if the scattershot nature of the canon has changed...)
