And I've got to admit...my real life biases are making it reeeeaaaaal hard to side with Dick here.

Even Bruce doesn't side with Dick here, so you're certainly not alone! Though I really have to say that Dick is far from a simple Bret-substitute, this isn't an allegory for the real Screwjob at all. This is like...a version of the Screwjob where Owen died before, and Bret wasn't leaving for more money from a major competitor but because he wanted to tell better stories with a little indie promotion, and if Bret were like a thousand times better and more reliable than he actually was. Jean-Paul isn't much at all like Shawn, he's more like Kevin Von Erich with actually a lot of Bret's ideas about legacies and honor, playing Shawn's role. I'd like to think how one feels about the real Screwjob doesn't have to map over onto this at all, because the characters and situation are quite different! Actually less dramatic too, I had a really hard time writing this because the reality is a thousand times cooler than any fictional version... :)
